FIM Newsletter – Sept 2005

I would like to brief my friends and associates on recent developments:

To Japan – again!

I will be going to the JVC Mastering Center in Yokohama again from October 10 to 15 for the mastering of four Decca albums. The original master tapes have been very meticulously transferred and tuned, ready for the XRCD24 format processing. To ensure the sound you love, I shall personally supervise the process. The sound is so fantastic that no audiophile will be disappointed!

FIMXR24 070 Film Spectacular Vol. II, and FIMXR24 071 Mozart – Divertimenti will be released by the end of November 2005.

FIMXR 068 Albeniz – Suite Espanola, and FIMXR24 069 Mozart – Sinfonia Concertante will be released by the end of December.

On the soft side

New Recordings

I have been working quite hard for your benefit in the past couple of months, creating two great recordings:

bulletSoundscapers – The Debut! This album was recorded in Toronto in August 2005 with a star-studded cast including the beloved guzheng virtuoso Li Wei, and erhu genius George Gao , plus three other jazz talents playing guitar, double bass, and drums. The repertoire is beautiful Chinese folklore in a dramatic jazz style. This performance is stunning and eye-opening. The recording engineer is Prof. Jim Anderson – a guarantee for the very best sound. No date for release yet.

bulletClassic Extravaganza (working title) with percussion specialist Harold Farberman conducting numerous FIM Virtuosi. This ensemble is made up of the world famous Colorado Quartet and the Ethos Percussion Group, playing beautiful pieces by Tchaikovsky, Offenbach, Mozart, J. Straus, and the beloved Red River Valley/Home On the Range medley in Harold’s sublime arrangement for world-class string and percussion. This is sure to be an audiophile blockbuster, recorded in the wonderful Fisher Center concert hall in Bard , USA by world famous recording engineer, and very respected friend of mine, Professor Keith Johnson of Reference Recordings. I attach great importance to this recording because it marks the 75th birthday of my long-time friend and mentor – Professor Harold Farberman!

Suggestions for more Decca titles

Please do yourself and other audiophiles a favor by suggesting albums from the Decca catalog that you would like to see released by FIM. After the current four titles, I shall confirm the next batch of four albums with Decca. Your input is important if you have some titles in mind, whether popular or classical. Please get me your valuable suggestions by the end of October.

New Releases

bullet The Black Vinyl CD Series

This is the result of my R & D efforts to introduce a series of good music at an affordable price. These CDs are only half the price of normal XRCDs, but have a level of quality in music and sound that has no peer in the industry!

The FIM Black Vinyl CD is a new product that looks like the old vinyl 45 rpm record, offering the same content options as the traditional CD, but with a retro appeal. Made from colored polycarbonate, the CD features a grooved look printed on the face of the CD to give it the unique appearance of a miniature record from years past. The music and sound is exactly the same as the existing SACD version, except that it is now an HDCD format playable on all CD players. Some dealers and distributors have already ordered and reordered the initial albums. The feedback and acceptance for these two titles are very encouraging indeed.

FIM 029 VD – Audiophile Reference IV

This is a popular existing SACD Hybrid title in our catalog, re-mastered into the new Black Vinyl CD format. This is a collection of the finest tracks from our catalog, with the primary objective of serving as a reference tool for testing audio systems, as well as for your listening enjoyment.

FIM 048 VD – Five Songbirds – A Reference Collection of Female Vocalists

This is also an existing SACD hybrid title from our catalog, a celebration of the signature songs of five great divas with superb musicality and excellent performance, which will satisfy even the most discriminating sensibilities of audiophiles everywhere. The disc includes songs by world-class singers Jacintha, Patricia Barber, Esther Ofarim, Ayaoko Hosokawa, and Marie Nakamoto.

bulletNew XRCD24 Albums!

After some delay, two new XRCD24 albums will now be available during the first week of October 2005. The delay was simply due to my uncompromising quest for the best possible quality in the mastering process.

FIMXR24 067 – Super Sounds Vol. II

Super Sound Vol. I has received unprecedented acclaim in each of the thirty countries where FIM recordings are marketed. Numerous requests for more have prompted us to produce a second album. Engineering Super Sounds II has been an even greater challenge than the first: in order to meet audiophiles’ expectations, it must not only equal, but exceed, the quality of the first project. Our team has been working very hard for several months to achieve this goal. And now, I am pleased to say that this second album definitely excels in both the repertoire and the sound as well!

FIMXR24 072 – Nature’s Concertos

Featuring a blend of traditional and original music that is a heartfelt tribute to Mother Nature. Performed by virtuoso musicians and accompanied by the actual sounds of nature, this XRCD24 album homogeneously merges together both sounds in complete harmony. Nature’s Concertos includes several traditional pieces of music, including special arrangements of Greensleeves, Amazing Grace, Water is Wide, and Shenandoah, as well as a few originals. The setting is beautiful beyond description. You will cherish the moments that you spend listening to it, embraced by Mother Nature. Mastered and manufactured to the highest technological standards, with passion and love, the sound is as crisp and clear as if you were standing outside surrounded by nature and far away from the modernized world.

 On the hard side

We have two upgrades to our very popular audio components:

  1. Model 880 20 amp. Dual Power Receptacle

This is the most popular of our three models of power receptacles, with several thousand units already installed. In line with our constant quest for improvement, we are pleased to announce that the 24k gold-plated version of this high purity copper wall power outlet is now available. The initial retail price was $100, but due to greater quantity in production, and the resulting reduction in costs, we can now offer a retail price of $80. In fact, we will be sending a credit note to those distributors/dealers who ordered this item during the months of August and September.

  1. Isolation Ball Bearing Pucks

The original pucks for our popular isolation ball bearing system are made of hardened, steel-plated brass, and the Model 305 Kit has been acclaimed for its successful application in several thousand sets, in addition to hundreds of platform systems.

We are proud to announce that our continuous R & D and manufacturing experience have now allowed us to employ high-grade 316 non-magnetic stainless steel for the pucks. Due to a much higher hardness specification, the sound of any A/V system using the new Model 305 or isolation platform system will be even better in definition, dynamics, and transparency.

To further maximize the benefits of the new design, we can now offer 305-3 Super, and 305-4 Super, which are pucks made of hardened stainless steel which is then platinum plated.

You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions.

Warm regards,

Winston Ma

New Release

I am very excited to inform you that our new album, The Legend of Guqin (FIMSACD M 054), released just this week, has already been bombarded with praise and acclaims.

When we released “River of Sorrow” 3 years ago, audiophiles thought it was legendary, both in performance and sonic excellence.  Last year, before we released “Autumn Yearning Fantasia”, it was already selected to be used s the demo reference for the seminar “The New Realism”, organized by Audio Engineering Society for recording engineers.

However, the immediate reception of this new album is just phenomenal. Audiophiles who bought it have unanimously used it as the yardstick for testing dynamics, harmonics, soundstage  ….

Here are the comments of Mr. Christophe Chagnard, Music Director and Conductor of three important orchestras in Seattle/Tacoma:

“TAICHI* (FIMSACD M 054 The Legend of Guqin) is FIM’s most ambitious marriage of Eastern and Western musical influences to date. It is also one of its most successful sonic achievements. The Concerto for Guqin and Piano makes no apologies. It is assertive, very confident and highly individualistic in its treatment of this most unusual orchestration. Mr. Kuan achieves the seemingly impossible task of balancing one of the most delicate of traditional Chinese instruments with its contemporary Western counterparts. The rest of the album is one sublime musical poem after another recorded with an astonishing level of finesse and transparency.

TAICHI should leave you in the same blissful state of mind as a good session of the discipline from which it borrows its name.”

bulletTAICHI is the name of the first piece in the album. Its full name is TAICHI Concerto for Guqin and Piano.

You may wish to listen to it in the first instance you can and see if you would agree to Mr. Chagnard’s views. You will find the CD jacket a piece of art in design too.

Newsletter January 2004

 Warm greetings to you!

I hope everything will fare very well with you, your family and business in the Year of the Monkey!

I have great pleasure of bringing good tidings to you: FIVE GREAT NEW ALBUMS for you for the first season of the year!

Here they are:

1.       FIMXR 006   RIVER OF SORROW Limited Edition  (XRCD24 format)

This album of immortal Chinese instrumental music was first released in SACD format in 2002. Immediately it received numerous international accolades including ‘The Best of The Ten Best Albums in 2002’ Award. My constant quest for perfection has prompted me to re-master it from original analog master tape (not DSD) by Paul Stubblebine for the newest XRCD24 format and have it meticulously produced as a limited edition deluxe packaging for 5000 pieces, each individually numbered. The sound is just OVERWELMING! 3000 copies have been sold during the first couple of weeks. This is an “audiophile to die for disc”. If you don’t want to miss it, better hurry up.

2.      FIMSACD M 045 Arabesque – A Journey to Harp Artistry (formerly named as Oh! That Beautiful Harp)

This is a very special disc, probably the first SACD Multi-Channel disc in the market, played by the legendary French harpist, Isabelle Perrin. The repertoire is a rendition of all the choicest pieces of the masters, in stunning and sparkling stereo/multi-channel sound, extreme articulate and beautiful.

 3.     FIMSACD 048 Five Songbirds

I am almost sure that you have heard or are, in fact, in possession of more than one or all the discs of our world famous female signers. They are really fascinating and sweet.  You may love Esther Ofarim, Jacintha, Patricia Barber, Ayyako Hosokawa, Mario Nakamoto or all of them. What about if the sound is now even better?! Yes. Paul Stubblebine has done it again  -- re-master the recordings all into DSD format. Yes. It is really wonderful. All their signature songs are included in ONE SINGLE DISC! Some customers at CES commented that it might be one of the hottest discs for this year. I tend to agree with them.

4.     FIMXR24 053  Autumn Yearning Fantasia

We take great pride in inform all our audiophile friends that this is the best sounding disc FIM has ever produced! Period!

This wonderful Chinese instrumentals was debuted at CES January CES. However, well before it was released, it was already chosen as the demo reference recording in the Annual AES (Audio Engineering Society) Conference Seminar in June 2003 at Banff, Canada, titling “The New Realism” on the subject of how to achieve best sound in a simultaneous stereo and multi-channel recording. Hence, you can imagine how good the sound is. The music and the performance are, of course, breathtaking. About 180 audio engineers were present. More details of this event are described in the liner notes of the album. It is a must own disc, if you claim yourself a true audiophile, and experience by yourself  ‘the most natural and musical sound ever recorded’.

5.     LIMXR 007 Super Double-Bass

Gary Karr is a very unique double-bass virtuoso, beloved by many who like the mellowness and deep tone of the double bass. Gary’s interpretation of the Master’s works is touching and profoundly musical. For the first time, we produce this album in the sonic brilliance of the newest XRCD24 format. It is a celebration of the cream of Gary’s performances. If you like music, you will like it very much as I do. There were many friends who shared my views as evidenced by the fact that this album was sold out at CES January 2004.

I think these five great albums will bring about new height of excitement to many FIM fans and hope you will do very well with them in the months to come.

In my next newsletter, I shall report on what recordings FIM will do for you and your customers.

Meanwhile, may I thank you once again for your support and wish you all the best.

Yours cordially,

Winston MA

Refining the Art of Listening

Listening is an art!

As I see it, the art of listening is a progressive art in itself, ever subject to refinement, to enhanced understanding and increased sensibility. It never stops and never ends – in the life of a passionate music lover, it is a continuous process. To achieve this higher level of appreciation, one has to be constantly in search of fine music, superior musicians, and the latest developments in the audio world. In the world of audio production, one must seek for these things with a view to incorporating worthwhile new discoveries into one’s body of work. The goal: to achieve an even higher level of quality than you have done before.

It is very gratifying to report that for the past five years, FIM has been able to keep moving forward its aspiration of refining and advancing the art of listening. This work is made possible by the generous assistance of great friends, artists, engineers and leading companies in the world of digital audio. Without their support, FIM would not be able to keep pace with all the incredibly rapid advancements that audio has seen in recent years, particularly in the realm of high resolution digital formats.

Below is a summary of what we accomplished during the past year in our pursuit of refining the art of listening:

 Music and Recordings

We take pride to report that the DSD™ recording of River Of Sorrow (FIMSACD 032) was awarded “Best of the Best” for the Most Outstanding Performance and Recordings in Year 2001 by Audio Land magazine; additionally, it received many “Best of the Month” ratings and numerous accolades from the review press.

Autumn In Seattle (FIMSACD 040; XRCD 043) in both SACD™ and XRCD™ formats was rated “The Best Sounding SACD and XRCD Ever!” by Hi Fi Reviews, “King of Audiophile Recording!” by Audiotechnique, “Best New Composition and Performance” in Japan¸ and won many “Best of the Month” ratings.

Our SACD Autumn Moon Over A Placid Lake, just released in December 2002, has already received some “Best of the Month” ratings and sold many thousands of copies. Sales are going very strong. I would not be surprised if it reaches the same remarkable level of record sales that River of Sorrow did!

Everyone has their own favorite FIM SACD; tastes do vary, after all! Nevertheless, we think the most beautiful album of the year among FIM productions should go to A Song For You, Karen, a special tribute to Karen Carpenter, featuring the stunning singing of Jacintha, on the 30th anniversary of Carpenter’s performing debut. Every aspect of this recording is superb:  the quality of the music, the arrangements, Jacintha’s singing — even the SACD jacket design! — mark it as one of our best productions. It is scheduled for release at CES 2003. Many reviewers who have received advance samples have already commented that Jacintha sang better than Karen Carpenter herself! I can’t wait for the response of the audiophile community internationally!

As I said in my preface in Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (FIMSACD 052), despite the fact that there are over 650 versions of this piece of music available on the market in various formats, I still think the performance on this recording to be the best. Of this SACD, David W. Robinson, Editor-in-Chief of Positive Feedback Online wrote: “I must say that this is an utterly captivating recording …truly magnificent …a new masterpiece … a real triumph of the audio arts! …”

 Coming in 2003

Among the exciting new recordings for Year 2003, the most significant and meaningful project should be the re-mastering of the legendary Sheffield Lab series. This will be done under our new label Lasting Impression Music (LIM) to differentiate the line from our current work at FIM. Two albums will debut at CES 2003: Growing Up In Hollywood Town (LIM XR 001) and Dave Grusin, Discovered Again, Plus (LIM XR 002). FIM adopted JVC’s latest technology XRCD24™ format in the re-mastering process. The sound is just awesome, and shows that 16-bit formats still have many possibilities!

 Recording and mastering formats

The process of refining the art of listening is very obvious in the critical realm of digital formats.

During the inception year in 1997, FIM used the 24k gold 20-bit HDCD™ format with a stringent specification of less than 20 BLERs (“Block Error Rate”). The industrial norm is 220. At that time, FIM was the second company that adopted this format. This format still remains one of the finest in the industry for standard CDs.

FIM then moved to JVC’s Extended Resolution CD (XRCD™) format in 1998, and in 1999 tried the improved version of this technology, XRCD2™. The dynamics and transparency these formats brought about had no peer at that time. FIM was the third company using this technology. Many audiophiles claim that they still like this format best, even now.

In 2000 the XRCD™ formats were challenged by the DVD-A™ and (especially) by the DSD™ (SACD™) formats. The latter, engineered by Sony/Philips, delivers such exceptional musical nuance, finesse, and “microphone feed/master tape” quality that it has taken the audiophile community by storm. Great mastering engineers (like Paul Stubblebine!) and studios all over the world now use DSD™ as their preferred digital standard, and with good reason:  it is quite simply the finest and most musical digital standard currently in existence. FIM was invited to be one of the initial labels to pioneer this format. We have produced extraordinary results as critics and reviewers the world over have acknowledged, and will continue to champion DSD™ and the SACD™ format.

We have not been active with the DVD-A™ format, because we feel that this format emphasizes video material rather than pure audiophile listening. We may attempt to produce a couple of DVD-A™ audiophile reference samplers later this year, in view of the fact that our SACD™ audiophile sampler has been used as the reference standard by many high-end audio companies and audiophiles alike. However, we shall continue to use the superior DSD™ format as our main vehicle in recording and mastering for the foreseeable future.

But we are not neglecting the 16-bit PCM front! JVC, in its continuous endeavor to break new ground, has just introduced (November, 2002) its latest technology: XRCD 24™. This interesting new system uses a special K2 technology, directly inputting 24-bit information onto 16-bit PCM masters. Utilizing a proprietary rubidium digital clocking device, XRCD 24™ is capable of producing stunningly dynamic and musical sound, rivaling analog format recordings. JVC is confident that XRCD 24™ can be compared to any of the best digital formats nowadays — thus its slogan: “24-bit Super Analog Sound.” Details are described elsewhere in this catalog. One of the beauties of this format is that it is playable on any CD player without the need of any special equipment, due to its 16-bit PCM encoding. FIM is very pleased to introduce XRCD 24™ to the audiophile community.

As always, we will seek to produce the very highest quality of audio reproduction possible in any format that we use. Our many loyal friends expect no less from us — and we would hate to disappoint them!

I would say that 2003 will be a very special year for FIM. Come and join our community of music lovers, those who value the beauty of exceptional recordings, the refinement of the art of listening, and the possibilities of fine audio!

Good listening, my friends!

FIM Newsletter   November 2002

1. Super XRCD!

We have been waiting for the maturity of this brand new world-class mastering format from JVC for over 18 months. Finally, I have just been told unofficially that JVC will make an official announcement of the introduction of this stunning mastering format on November 13 2002 in Japan. The XRCD2 has already been acclaimed to be one of the best mastering formats. However, I was told that the sound quality of Super XRCD has no peer at and put its predecessor – XRCD 2 to shame! I am eager to find out how good it is in comparison with SACD and DVD/A technology. To achieve this, I am flying to Yokohama, JVC Mastering Center Headquarters to witness this and let you know my first impression! More breaking news in the ensuing paragraphs.

2.  Sheffield Lab recordings

All experienced audiophiles know well how good sounding the famous direct-cut LPs from the pioneer of all audiophile labels – Sheffield Lab recordings and the maestro behind it – Doug Sax.

Only recently, FIM has been given the honor and privilege of entering into an agreement with this truly world-class label to re-master selected titled, by stages, into Super XRCD products and market them on an international basis!

The first stage consists of five titles  -- guess what they are?

They are:

1.      Growing Up In Hollywood Town

2.      Dave Grusin, Plus

3.      Drum & Track Disc

4.      James Newton Howard & Friends

5.      Lincoln Mayorgar & Distinguished Colleagues

I am flying to Yokohama on November 14 – 19 bringing with me these five original master tapes for Super XRCD mastering. Hopefully, I can come up with a couple of albums for January CES 2003! Let us keep our fingers crossed.

3.  The SACD Front

Like some other labels, FIM has been experiencing difficulty in getting deliveries of new albums from Sonopress, Germany.  There is a long queue there. After I have made some strong expressions, I was told that the long-waited three great titles would be shipped within November 2002, hopefully in the third week. The three titles are:

1.  Autumn Moon Over A Placid Lake FIMSACD M 042 – the first multi-channel disc for exquisite Chinese music, beautifully recorded and packaged. Many thousand pieces have already been pre-sold! Hence, please order a good quantity in advance before the stock is gone.

2. The Four Seasons FIMSACD 052 This is a re-mastered legendary performance, acclaimed as the best one in the last century. I have some 30 versions of this piece, and I have found this performance is far superior to any in my collection. You may wish to know that there are more than 650 recordings of this popular composition as reported on the Internet!  I believe this one should be amongst the very best, if not the best. Listening is believing.

3. A Song For You, Karen FIMSACD 035 This is a special tribute to our beloved Carpenters on the occasion of their 30th year anniversary. Guest who is the singer, the music director and the recording engineer? Jacintha, Jeremy Monteiro and Jim Anderson!!!. A truly world-class team. The album is simply breathtaking in all respect.

4. Replenishment of old titles

I am fully aware that you have been ordering some old titles and that they have not been available for some months or even over a year. Do you know why? It is because since Zomax Optical Products has closed down its production line for gold CDs, I have not been able to find any gold CD replication plant that will agree to produce FIM Gold CDs under 20 Block Error Rate (BLER). (The industry norm is 220 BLERs.  We are 11 times lower in jitter and distortion than the industry norm!) Low distortion and low jitter rate are some of the secrets why FIM CDs always sound better than most CDs in the industry. Of course, it is more expensive to produce, but FIM attaches great importance to quality, as always.  Finally, after a lot of research and effort, a replication plant in USA has kindly agreed to do it for FIM and will certify every production run to be under 20 BLER!

Hence, from November 10 2002 the following titles are available again:

1.      Audiophile Reference I Classical FIMCD 006

2.      Audiophile reference II Popular FIMCD 007

3.      Feelings FIMCD 016

4.      Percussion fantasia FIMCD 017

Please disregard your back orders. Just send in a new one. Thank you.

Warm regards,

Winston MA

There is no doubt about it:  SACD™ and XRCD™ are widely considered by the audiophile community to be the two best digital formats available today.

Comments from critics/Manufacturers/customers on Model 880

The Model 880 is so far the best wall receptacle I have ever experienced. It has very good tonal balance and is extremely transparent. The high frequency bandwidth is sweet; the bass region is tight and the mid-range is rich!

We at Harmonix have, therefore, chosen it for use on ALS 777, our top-of-the-line power conditioner that retails for $5,000.00. This is the highest commendation we can give to this wonderful receptacle.
